Tip of the Week
Where Does Power Come from in the Golf Swing?
Why is it a 13 year old girl who weighs 7 stone can hit it 30 yards further than a 45 year old man who weighs 15 stone?
I suppose the question we need to ask ourselves is where does power come from in the golf swing? Strength is certainly a factor, many of the tour players are going to the gym now and as a result are hitting it longer. For tour players who are looking for that additional edge, going to the gym is clearly helping. This, however, could take weeks, months, maybe even years before the average golfer notices any significant increases in distance.
So let me offer you a faster way.
Take yourself off to the driving range and grab a 7 iron. Holding the club make some swings with as tight a grip as possible. Make some swings backwards and forwards keep the grip pressure tight; notice what that feels like. Do this 6 or 7 times, then continuing to swing the club backwards and forwards, begin to notice the grip pressure becoming looser, gradually going from 10 to 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, still swinging the club backwards and forwards.
Now what do you notice? How would you describe this swing? Here is how some of my students have described the difference:
- Relaxed - Smoother - Flowing - Letting the club do the work
- Less effort - Out of control | |
Now, if you are feeling brave, put a ball on a tee and complete the exercise again but this time as you swing the club backwards and forwards you are going to walk to the ball with the club still swinging and hit the ball. Let me clarify this point. At no point does the club head stop moving. You keep swinging it and when you are ready you just step to the ball and hit it. Golfers are amazed just how far they can hit it and also that they can hit it so well on the move.
Let me know how you get on! Book a lesson and let's get started on the road to a more powerful swing.
